NZPA Melbourne The Sydney trainer, Tommy Smith, was full of confidence that Red Anchor would give him a record breaking 31 Derby successes at Flemington tomorrow after seeing the champion colt work there yesterday morning.

The winner of the Cox Plate in course record time, Red Anchor will go in to the sAust3oo,ooo Victoria Derby (2500 m an odds-on favourite to give Smith his fifth winner in the race.

Smith and New Zealand trainer, the late Dick Mason, hold the Southern Hemisphere record with 30 wins each and his Victoria Derby winners to date are Tulloch (1957), Travel Boy (1959), Silver Sharpe (1970) and Brewery Boy (1981).

“He is as good now as he was going into the Cox Plate last week,” said Smith after watching Red Anchor work with his main Melbourne Cup hope, Alibhai.

Red Anchor, with his race rider, Mick Dittman, in the saddle, worked over 1600 m on the course proper in 1:50.55. The pair sprinted home the last 600 m in 375.

The markers were out 10m.
