National deal sought for water export

in neisuii A national agreement will be sought between watersiders and harbour board employees as a result of a demarcation dispute at Port Nelson that has stopped the export of water to Nauru., A manning dispute between the Nelson Harbour Board and the Harbour Boards Employees’ Union was resolved on Tuesday afternoon. The settlement appeared to end a deadlock on the loading of 17,000 tonnes of fresh water aboard the phosphate carrier Sanko

Heritage for its return to Nauru. But the Waterside Workers Federation objected to the application of the agreement and the loading of water was cancelled for the second time. The 19,340-ton Sanko Heritage completed unloading phosphate on Tuesday after berthing late on Friday. The ship will now sail, without water to supplement the Pacific phosphate island’s supply. The port conciliation committee called a meeting yesterday to “deal with an inter-union matter”.
