Consistency of keelers

Consistent performance from three keelers marked the Banks Pensinsula Cruising Club’s double event last week-end. Ivanhoe (A. J. Carr) headed home the second division fleet on both days; and Nerissa (K. B. and A. B. Marshall) took firstdivision handicap honours from Crusade (A. K. and W. W. Archer) on Saturday and again on Sunday.

The first race was from Lyttelton to Port Levy, the first and second division yachts taking in a buoy off Brighton while the cruising section sailed directly to Port Levy. Not all yachts spent the night at Port Levy, but big fleets were on hand to contest the racing on both days.

The events for the cruising section are proving a popular addition to the club’s programme this season, the 14 or so yachts facing the starter on each occasion so far being a match for the number of entrants in each of the two “racing” divisions. Light variable winds from the north-west on Saturday swung to the north-east and freshened only after most of the fleet had rounded the Brighton Buoy. Perhaps the most notable event of the day was the relegation of Southern Fun has made a habit of being first home

since launched last season; on Saturday she was no match for Rockabye (S. Rose) in spite of a spirited late challenge. Sunday provided ideal sailing in brilliant sunshine and a brisk north-easterly. The only fault might have been that, in such conditions, the course was too short and the race over too early. Results were:—

Saturday First division: Nerissa, 4hr smin Ils, 1; Crusade, 4:17:11, 2; Natural Magic (I. R. Atkinson), 4:22:39, 3. Line honours, Rockabye.

Second division: Rainbow 111 (J. A. F. Cotton), 3:57:14, 1; Rebecca (P. W. Blain), 4:20:21, 2; Spindrift (P. J. Woolman), 4:21:12, 3. Line honours, Ivan-, hoe.

Cruising division: Cygnet (D. J. Lattimore), 2:30:15, 1; Swiftsure (B. R. Meads), 2:30:28, 2; Angelique (D. Johnstone), 2:32:58, 3. Line honours, Cygnet. Sunday
