Heavy scoring in cricket draw
Fluent batting on the amiable Dudley Park pitch in Rangiora led to a rundrenched draw in the recent cricket match between the B teams of North Canterbury and Marlborough. The principal figures at the crease were Kelvin Read, for Marlborough, and Dean Lund, for the home XI.
Read, an opening bats-man-wicketkeeper, followed up a first innings knock of 55 with an impressive 178 as Marlborough heaped on runs in a bid to choke off North Canterbury’s chase. Read shared a second innings opening stand of 186 with Donal Boyle.
But although faced with 270 runs to win, North Canterbury went for its target with confidence. This was largely because of the bold batting of Lund, aged 17, of
Kaikoura, who applied himself to his task with remarkable maturity.
He made 81 after an earlier effort of 48, and so top-scored in both innings. The match finished on a knife-edge, with North Canterbury a mere 21 runs away from victory, but with only two wickets standing. Scores:—
Marlborough B, 164 (Barry Drummond 68, Read 55; Gary Chamberlain 4/49, Paul Ridden 2/44, lan Henderson 2/25) and 278/5 dec. (Read 178, Boyle 52, Bob Eastgate 27) drew with North Canterbury B, 173/7
dec. (Lund 48, Kerry O’Loughlin 43, Brian Hawkins 33 not out; Kevin Cresswell 3/65, Barry Cresswell 2/34) and 249/8 (Lund 81, Hugh Wright 53, Hawkins 43, Kevin Cresswell 2/70, Kevin Moran 2/ 61).
