Otago, upset

PA Hastings Hawkes Bay caused a major upset in the national first division rugby championship when it beat Otago, 28-20, yesterday. Hawkes Bay, trailing, 136, at half-time, gave a determined second-half effort, led brilliantly by the new captain, Neil Murphy at half-back. Hawkes Bay scored three tries, but the win was based on a strong pack effort which proved too much for Otago, the co-leader with Auckland.

The hooker, Gary Gregory, took three tight heads, one of which led to a try to Murphy late in the game.

Scores: Hawkes Bay 28: (Ken Taylor, Peter Davis, Neil Murphy, tries; Dan Kirby, 3 penalty goals, 2 conversions; Peter Jones, dropped goal). Otago 20: (Tony Lewis, Warren Matene, Phil Young, tries; Greg Cooper 2 penalty goals and a conversion). In the curtain-raiser, the Australian secondary schools beat a North Island central region secondary schools side, 19-9.

For Australia Tony Grigson (2), and Glen Yaylor scored tries; Mark Patterson, kicked a penalty and 2 conversions. For Central Region Simon Clavis scored a try; Matthew Cooper kicked a penalty and a conversion.
