Milestone for Mexted

PA Rotorua Wellington outplayed Bay of Plenty for a 29-12 win and another two points in its national rugby first division championship match at Rotorua yesterday. The Wellington forwards were well led by their captain, Murray Mexted, and had the Bay forwards struggling throughout. The match marked a fitting century of games for Mexted. Dave Mahanga grabbed five tightheads, and Allan Mexted, Mike O’Leary and Jim Mei drove forward vigorously. The half-back, Peter Barlow, used possession to advantage with some clever

distribution and strong runs from the base of the scrum. Even allowing for some peculiar refereeing by Mr Don Shaw Hawk’s Bay) the Bay was never in the hunt. The only facet of play in which the Bay managed to win some ball was in short lineouts where Gary Braid and Craig Ross tapped back well. Scorers:

Wellington 29 (Scott Crighton, Murray Mexted, David Ngati, Peter Barlow, Allan Pollock, tries; John Gallagher, three conversions and a penalty goal). Bay of Plenty 12 (Craig Ross, try; Ron Preston, conversion, two penalty goals). Half-time: 15-6.
