Fourth hooker for Canty
By
KEVIN McMENAMIN
The Canterbury rugby team will have its fourth hooker of the season when it defends the Ranfurly Shield against Wairarapa-Bush at Lancaster Park on Saturday.
The latest man to fill the position is Andrew McKellar, of Lincoln College. He follows in the steps of Gwynne Williams, who was lost through injury. Merv Aoake, and Brett Dixon, who has been relegated to the reserves this week.
McKellar, whose family lives in Mid-Canterbury, played for the Christ’s College first XV four years ago, and since then has represented Canterbury at the under 21, senior B and colts levels./
The only changes in the team from last Saturday are in the forwards, the backs being as they were
for the Auckland match. In addition to McKellar, the selector, Mr Alex Wyllie, has restored Barry White to the side of the scrum and, for the time being, has coupled Dale Atkins and Andy Earl at No. 8.
The likelihood is that Earl will get the nod to play against his former province, and thus give Atkins the rest he possibly needs. The team for Saturday is:—
Robbie Deans, Craig Green, Victor Simpson, Andrew McMaster, Wayne Burleigh, Wayne Smith, ■ Bruce ■ Deans; Atkins or Earl, Doh Hayes (captain), Albert Anderson, Tony Thorpe, White, Murray Davie, McKellar, John Ashworth.
Reserves— Backs: DavidFarrant, Adrian Boyd, Steve Baker. Forwards: Phil Robson, Dixon, Atkins or Earl.
