Canterbury Park increases stakes
The schedule for stakes to be paid for normal handicap races have been lifted by $250 to $5OO by the Canterbury Park Club for its seven meetings to be run at Addington Raceway this season. This follows a lift in stakes by the New Brighton Club and one expected to be announced soon by the Metropolitan Club. The new stakes for Canterbury Park, with those for the past season in parentheses, are: CO, $3OOO ($2750); Cl, $3200 ($2950); C2, $3600 ($3350); C 3, $4OOO ($3750); C 4, $5OOO ($4500); C 5, $5500 ($5000). The basic stakes for C 6 will be $6500 and for C 7
events, $7OOO. The basic stake for two-year-olds will be $3500, against $3200, while that for three-year-olds will be $3750, against $3700. The stake for four-year-old events will be $4OOO, against $3BOO. The club will continue its Lion Brown Three-year-old series in October. There will be $4OOO heats over 2000 m from a mobile start on October 3 and 10, with a final of $lO,OOO over the same distance on Friday, October 19. Last year, when the series was introduced, the final was worth $7500. The club will cater for C 5 and faster pacers in the
main events on October 3 and 10, while the Mazda Handicap, with a C 8 front, to be run over 2600 m for a stake of $BOOO, against $7500 last year, will be the main event on October 19. There will be a $7500 race for four-year-olds assessed at C2 and faster run over 2600 m on October 19, while a race for C 4 and faster trotters has been included in that programme. There will be 19 mobile starts over the three nights in October. Stakes for other feature races this season will be considered when programmes come up for approval.
