College finalists

Nelson College and Wanganui Collegiate emerged as finalists in the annual intercollegiate rugby tournament in Christchurch yesterday. After being presented with first use of a strong wind, Wanganui played solid, sensible rugby to shut out Christ’s College, 15-0. Nelson won the other game, against Wellington College, by 6-4. Strong, controlled play by the Wanganui locks, H. Brewer and W. G. Rathbone, played a vital role in their side’s success. Their driving play was complemented by the bustling play of the busy half-back, M. Vaea, who

also contributed a try, two conversions and a penalty goal. Brewer scored Wanganui’s other try. Forward passes cost Wellington dearly in the first half of the other game. The one flowing move in which everything clicked produced a try to S. Holden which gave the side a 4-0 half-time lead.

Attacking vigorously with the wind behind it in the second half, Nelson crossed the goal-line three times for no reward before P. Higgins grabbed a try. D. Powell’s all-important conversion bounced off both uprights before crossing the bar.
