Vainio loses medal
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles Martti Vainio, of Finland, will forfeit his Olympic 10,000 m silver medal after being disqualified for doping, the International Olympic Committee said yesterday. Prince Alexandre de Merode, the chairman of the 1.0. C. medical commission, told reporters the 1.0. C. had dealt with six doping cases, including Vainio, during the Los Angeles Games. But he said rulings were still awaited in four more cases. These would not be dealt with until the next executive board meeting in Mexico City in November. He declined to name the four athletes whose cases still had to be dealt with, but said none was a medallist.
A urine sample from Vainio, a former European champion and the most prominent athlete to be stripped of an Olympic medal, showed traces of bulk-building anabolic steroids.
His disqualification meant Mike McLeod, of Britain, moved up to the silver medal position, with Kenya’s Mike Musyoki, originally fourth, taking the bronze. Alberto Cova, of Italy, won the gold.
Carl-Olaf Homen, the leader of the Finnish Olympic delegation, said yesterday that Vainio had stressed he had not deliberately taken steroids.
