Duty problem resolved

Import duties on electronic goods were returned this week to the level they stood at before Parliament was dissolved.
The Comptroller of Customs, Mr P. J. McKone, said yesterday that an Order-in-Council had been put through to remedy the problems caused by the election. Effectively it reintroduces cuts of about 20 per cent brought in in January on a range of electrical machinery, optical, photographic and cinemato-
graphic materials, medical and surgical instruments, clocks and watches, musical instruments, and sound-re-cording equipment.
The Government had not intended to have them lifted, but the Customs Department was caught out by the early dissolution.
The law requires that if new duties are not confirmed by act of Parliament before July 1 they are deemed to have lapsed on the last day of the session and this had not been done when the House was adjourned.
