Airport fogbound

Christchurch Airport was forced to close late yesterday afternoon because of heavy fog.

About 1000 people were affected by the cancellations. An Air New Zealand spokesman said that seven inward and six outward flights were cancelled. The fog cleared a little later in the evening, so that two flights arrived after 10 p.m. The spokesman said the weather was similar throughout the country, and so some flights had to be accepted in marginal conditions because the airports they came from were closed.

Most of the passengers affected by the cancellations would be on their way today, he said. However a special flight which had to be scheduled for Auckland at noon today, would not completely clear the backlog and another flight might have to be arranged, said the spokesman.
