Forest exports

Sir, — J. R. O’Regan (“The Press,” June 19) incorrectly describes the Perseverance area proposed by the West Coast United Council for clearing. Some of it is virgin beech and white pine forest, the rest is good-quality regrowth. The whole point of his letter is that the forest should be cleared because the region is “grossly underpopulated and in need of development.” Should fine bush be felled at a cost to the country and uneconomic farms be created, producing dairy produce we cannot sell, just to populate a remote area? If Mr O’Regan is concerned with underpopulation he should be just as happy to develop waste lands, and establish farms and people without felling more bush. Many more dairy farms could be created in the area without felling a single tree. — Yours, etc., Miss L. T. TAYLOR. June 19, 1984.
