Parties close in popularity poll
PA Wellington National and Labour are still involved in a neck-and-neck battle, according to the Heylen-"Eyewitness" political poll published last evening. The poll, taken on May 26, showed National on 44 per cent support, Labour on 43 per cent, while Social Credit and the New Zealand Party recorded further slight drops to 6 and 7 per cent, respectively. For Labour there was a further worrying drop for the party leader, Mr Lange, who now has only 13 per cent support as the preferred Prime Minister. The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, scored 34 per cent. The poll results, with the results for the previous month in brackets, are: National, 44 per cent (43); Labour, 43 (40); Social Credit, 6 (8); and New Zealand Party, 7 (8). For preferred Prime Minister: Sir Robert Muldoon, 34 (35); and Mr Lange, 13 (16). Others showing as preferred Prime Minister were Labour’s deputy leader, Mr Palmer, with 5.8 per cent; the National backbencher. Mr Derek Quigley, 5.5; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr McLay, 5.2; and the New Zealand Party leader, Mr Bob Jones, 5.1.
