One upset in bowls
PA Whangarei Section play in the indoor bowls pairs championships at Wanganui finished yesterday with 348 teams qualifying for post-selection play. The Australian pairs champions, Bill Kane and Garry Flewitt, from Southland,’ easily won their four games. Their fellow Southlanders, Norm le Lievre and Graham Jones, also took four wins. The top Waikato pair, Ray Eccles and Arthur Bettridge, won their four qualifying games, as did Graham Pedersen and Kevin Boothby. The Bay of Plenty pairs who qualified include Barry Meecham and Betty Hayward, with three wins. Two Bay of Plenty representatives, Dennis Baker and Audrey Thompson, teamed and had four wins, beating the North Island reserves, Jim Hunt and Peter Walker, from Auckland, in their last game.
An upset was the defeat
of Brian and Lyn Ruthie. winners of the 1983 Bob Malcolm Tray, who failed to qualify. Manawatu qualifiers include Bruce Meyer and Paul Wilmshurst, and Marj Mac Kay and Frances Sowerby, with four wins each. The Auckland DB Masters winner, Colin Taylor, teamed with Basil Rainsford to win four. Other successful qualifiers from Auckland include the mother and daughter team of Ellen and Janet Tucker. The King Country pairs Keith Waghorn and' Dawn Adams, and Tony and Jill Webber each qualified with four wins. These four teammates won the 1983 BNZ mixed fours and will combine skills again tomorrow for qualifying rounds of the fours. An upset from Monday's pairs section play was the failure to qualify by the 1983 pairs champions. Arnold Hutchins and Ross Smith, from Poverty Bay.
