Rufer doubtful
PA Wellington Wynton Rufer is not sure whether he will be available to play for New Zealand in the qualifying series for the 1986 World Cup soccer competition. His brother Shane may also not be available, Rufer said in Wellington yesterday. The 21-year-old striker, whose goals helped New Zealand to the 1982 finals, has just completed another season as a professional with FC Zurich in Switzerland. It is his commitment to his club that makes the Rufers’ availability for New Zealand doubtful. Both are likely to miss New Zealand’s tour to
Europe later this year but Wynton could play for New Zealand against FC Zurich in January. The club is keen to tour here as the northern winter permits only indoor training in Switzerland at the time, he said. “If we don’t come here, we’ll probably go to Singapore or Australia,” Rufer said, adding that the tour would depend on approval from the New Zealand Football Association. New Zealand plans a series of home matches against European clubs next June and Rufer is confident of playing in those. But he is uncertain about the qualifying matches, which start in October, 1985.
