Rangers to test United
By
DAVID LEGGAT
Christchurch Brother United is unlikely to have an easy passage to the fourth round of the Adidas Chatham Cup soccer competition when it meets Rangers at English Park tonight. Rangers are leading the Hertz League competition, albeit by a solitary point, and they have proved repeatedly how difficult an opponent they can be. Only once this season have they been well and truly hammered. That was
when that most inconsistent of teams, Woolston W.M.C., for once revealed what it can achieve when playing to its best form, and comprehensively took Rangers apart, 4-1. The Rangers coach, Bill McDonald, has a fully fit squad to select his team and believes that provided his team plays up to its potential they will give United “a good run.” He agreed that the added incentive for the winner of a plum home draw in the fourth round, against North End United, should act as a
spur for his players. United will have Steve Wooddin back in its line-up after serving his two-game suspension, but that is offset by the departure to Britain of its other experienced striker, Andy Harrison. The anticipated arrival of Robbie Hill, from the Isthmian League club, Aveley, early next week should fill the gap left by Harrison. Bobby Almond is likely to miss the match due to his knee injury, and Alan South should again be at centre back. Man for man, United
should be comfortably superior, but Cup ties have a welcome habit of producing a decent share of spills and upsets, results which turn the form book upside down. The only other time Rangers have had a night game this season at English Park was against Woolston. They will be hoping that result is not an omen for tonight. The curtain-raiser will be a super youth league match between Cashmere-Wan-derers and Nomads United.
