Conservation and development
Sir,—The annual reports of the Commission for the Environment and the Nature Conservation Council have been tabled in Parliament. They are not encouraging. The commission states that the environment is not being accorded the importance it deserves. It pays tribute, however, to “the sterling efforts of the environmental movement to raise awareness in the community. Without such grassroots activism by citizens with a real concern for what is happening to New Zealand, the situation would be a lot worse.” The council regrets that after three years since it published “Integrating Conservation and Development,” and submitted this proposal for a New Zealand strategy based on sustainability of natural resources to the Government, there has still been no response. The director-general of the 1.U.C.N., Dr Kenton Miller, when here recently, observed that implementation of the world conservation strategy, of which the New Zealand proposal is a part, was a problem of mentality, not economics. — Yours, etc.,
ERIC BENNETT, Wellington. June 10, 1984.
