Boats on the Avon
Sir,—Now that I have read what is envisaged in this scheme, I can see it all. Scene I: The Avon just below the Hereford Street Bridge, with the small island dividing its sparkling waters. Scene II: A vessel approaches, containing 26 pairs of prying eyes, with its engine roaring and its rubber wheels turning in its attempt to negotiate the narrow, swift passage. Scene III: Downstream, several miles of silt-laden water in place of the usual clear, tranquil stream. Scene IV: The ghosts of our ancestors jumping up and down in horror in the old Provincial Council Chambers. Caption: Christchurch — the Garden City of New Zealand — Venice of the Southern Hemisphere. — Yours, etc., MAURICE SIMES. June 12, 1984.
