Colleagues in squash final

Paul Viggers (Sumner) and Craig Hibbert (Linwood), colleagues in a Christchurch sports shop, will meet in the men’s final of the Hunter Lounge Suites Linwood open squash tournament this afternoon. Yesterday both Viggers, the No. 1 seed, and Hibbert, seeded No. 2, dropped a game in their semi-final matches against Malcolm Mcßain (Christchurch) and Robbie Burnett (Linwood), respectively. But Viggers, New Zealand’s topranked resident player, allowed Mcßain only four points in the other three games. Mcßain, who was unseeded, made the semi-finals with a straight games win over John Knight (Linwood), who had upset the No. 4 seed, Lyn Sparks Marist), in the first round.

The women’s final will be fought between the top seed, Carolyn Viggers (Mount Pleasant), and Freda Walker (Linwood). Whereas Viggers beat Mary Hunt (St Andrew’s), 3-0, in their semi-final, Walker had a real battle with the 17-year-old junior, Justine Marriott (Sumner), before prevailing in five games. Results:— Men’s open (semi-finals).—P. Viggers (Sumner) beat M. Mcßain (Christchurch), 9-0, 9-1, 2-9, 9-3; C. Hibbert (Linwood) beat R. Burnett (Linwood), 9-5, 10-9, 3-9, 9-1. Women’s open (semifinals).—C. Viggers (Mount Pleasant) beat M. Hunt (St Andrew’s), 9-2, 9-5, 9-5; F. Walker (Linwood) beat J. Marriott (Sumner), 10-8, 9-4, 2-9, 49, 9-6.
