Award for architects

The Christchurch architects, Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney, have been awarded a 1984 National Design Award for the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington by the New Zealand Institute of Architects and Pilkington Bros. Announcing the award,

Mr John Sutherland, president of the N.Z.1.A., said that the Michael Fowler Centre had already been the subject of much praise and criticism. It had survived both and was a very popular building much envied by the. rest of New Zealand. The awards jury emphasised that the significance of the centre on the Wellington townscape reflected the singularity of purpose that the architects had channelled into the building. Other national awards were presented to two Auckland practices, JASMaD Group, Ltd, for the Cable Price Toyota dealership at Wiri, and architects Dodd Patterson for the East Coast Bays library. In Wellington, awards were presented to Athfield Architects for the First Church of Christ Scientist and the Structon Group for

the new physics and engineering buildihg. In the South Island, the Invercargill architect, John McCulloch, was honoured for his restoration of Winton Holy Trinity Church.
