Group to fight glue sniffing

PA Hamilton An organisation to fight solvent sniffing has been proposed for South Waikato. A member of a steering committee, Mr Ray Hewlett, said that the police and staff of the Department of Social Welfare at any one time could name around 70 “sniffers” in the Tokoroa, Putaruru, and Mangakino areas. “The sniffing problem is a nationwide one which is growing significantly,” Mr Hewlett said in a letter to a meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board’s finance and administration committee. Representatives of the Social Welfare department, the police, the Department of Health, the Probation Service, the Department of Maori Affairs, the National Society on Alcoholism and. Drug Dependence and the Tokoroa Borough Council had attended meetings so far, Mr Hewlett said.
