Naval volunteers to join up
PA Auckland About 20 of the 82 unemployed youngsters accepted by the. Navy under the limited volunteer service training scheme are expected to join up full-time. The commander of Navy specialist training, Commander David Douglas, has said that minor administrative formalities had to be processed before the exact number would be known. . The 82 entered H.M.N.Z.S. Tamaki earlier this year on the 20-week courses of basic
Navy training, and trade training. The basic training finished this week. On May 21, after two weeks leave, they will begin occupational training. Commander Douglas said the intake had “matched up” to Navy requirements. Only two of the original intake had been discharged, one at the volunteer’s personal request. Of those who volunteered to join the regular Navy, three-quarters were male.
