Railwaymen being ‘manipulated’

PA Blenheim The National Union of Railwaymen is heading along a course of selfdestruction, manipulated by its national council, a union leader has said. The Seddon delegate to the Blenheim branch of the N.U.R., Mr Dan Couper, said Blenheim members of the union had been “ashamed of the carry-on” in Picton at Easter, when railwaymen had imposed a freight ban over rosters. The union leadership was dictatorial, he said. Mr Couper, who asserted

to speak for the majority of branch union members, said the membership was not working- as a union, but being dictated to by N.U.R.’s national council which was “politically motivated.” “We are treated like puppets,” he said. “Picton is definitely being used. You never hear of trouble at the other end of the ferries, in Wellington.” Union members in Marlborough will hold two meetings with the Railways Corporation this week in a bid to save threatened jobs at Blenheim and Picton.
