Budget may rise 18 p.c.

This year’s Christchurch City Council budget for city health services might increase about 18 per cent. The annual plan and subbudget presented to the community services and health committee of the council yesterday proposes an increase of $104,624 or 18.9 per cent on last year’s vote for the city health department. Two of the biggest costs

would be the provision for noise control services at $26,000 and the transfer of litter control expenses from the works and planning budget.

The plan also notes a decreased revenue within the department of $23,622 because of a decrease in P.E.P. activities, a decreased return from apartment licences and a decreased return from fines.

The community services plan and sub-budget allows for a total budget for community services of $644,760, compared with $573,638 last year.

Of that total $552,956 would be met from rates, representing an increase of 13.9 per cent. The figures were received for discussion by the budget sub-committee and are subject to amendment.
