Stowaways on the run
PA Auckland One of two young Tongan stowaways who escaped in Auckland yesteray may celebrate his fifteenth birthday on the run. The pair were with four other young Tongans found in the cargo hold of the vessel Tasi two days out of Nukualofa. They arrived in Timaru on Sunday and were brought to Auckland where
they were to be sent back to Tonga. However, as the two were being taken to Auckland Airport by immigration officers they leapt out of the car when it stopped at traffic lights and ran off. The other four stowaways were put on the flight back to Tonga. The Director of Immigration, Mr D. D. Bond, said that one of the missing
youths was aged 15, while the other would turn 15 tomorrow. He said the police had been notified of their escape, but because of the youths’ ages they did not have warrants to act on. It is believed that immigration officers are checking with the boys’ relatives in Tonga to see where they might go in Auckland.
