Aoake wins Canty place
The University captain. Merv Aoake, will play his first game of rugby for Canterbury on Lancaster park when the province meets Queensland on Sunday. Aoake, the only newcomer to the squad so far this year, actually made his first-class debut when Canterbury played Wasps at Rotorua on Easter Sunday. During the game he replaced the hooker, Gwyn Williams, who had suffered a leg injury. With Williams still affected by the injury, Aoake wins selection. Canterbury’s other hooker of the last two seasons, John Mills, has moved to Auckland and a good display by Aoake on Sunday would almost cer-
tainly clinch him the vacancy. Although there are some minor injuries in the squad, the selector, Alex Wyllie, has been able to name a strong side. The only notable absentee from last year is the All Black second five-eighths, Warwick Taylor, who has still to play any rugby this season. As in the Wasps game, Wayne Burleigh will fill Taylor’s position. The team is:
Robbie Deans; Andrew McMaster, Victor Simpson, Craig Green; Burleigh, Wayne Smith; Bruce Deans, Dale Atkins; Don Hayes (captain), Albert Anderson, Tony Thorpe, Jock Hobbs; John Ashworth, Aoake, Murray Davie.
