Molloy confident of win
NZPA-AAP Yass, N.S.W.
The leader of the Westfield Melbourne to Sydney marathon, Geoff Molloy, said today he had the race “wrapped up” and should be collecting the ?A20,000 (SNZ2B,OOO) winner’s cheque in the next few days. The 41-year-old Victorian mowing contractor passed through the southern New South Wales town of Yass yesterday afternoon and was maintaining a good pace about 18km ahead of the West Australian, Joe Record.
Molloy has led ths field
since early Sunday morning and said that because noone had taken the lead from him now, he could see very few problems in retaining it for the remaining 280 km. He had covered about 600 km with 340 of those as leader. In third place, 30km from the lead, was the New Zealand policeman, John Hughes, with Wai McCrorie another 12km back.
The defending champion, Cliff Young, was in 12th place, 130 km from the leaders.
The field stretched over 265 km.
