Jobless numbers fall
PA Wellington The number of people on the unemployment benefit has dropped 5 per cent, said the Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Young, yesterday. A total of 45,646 people were receiving the benefit at March 30, a drop of 2374 on the previous fortnight. ° W Young-said it was received by 29,016 men and 16,630 women. The total of unemployed was 2.8 per cent lower than at the same time last year, and was the lowest fortnightly figure since February, 1983,. he said.
The Federation of Labour’s president, Mr W. J. Knox, said that the federation was pleased to note the recent drop in registered unemployed, but he feared that it reflected "a familiar election year cycle.” He said that the comment by the Minister of Labour, Mr, Bolger, that the latest figure indicated “a big turnaround” had to be regarded with a certain amount of cynicism.
“This is nothing more than the familiar pre-elec-tion cycle in full swing once again,” said Mr Knox.
