Parade for knitters
A fashion parade held in Christchurch yesterday by McMahon’s Farm Yarns, Ltd, of Australia, featured garments made from New Zealand Perendale wool yarns. Mrs Jenny McMahon says Perendale yarns have advantages over other wools in fashion design. “It doesn’t lose its shape, it has incredible warmth for less weight, and it washes like a dream. I am proud of it,” she said. McMahon’s Farm Yarns has more than 200 patterns for people to knit highfashion garments for themselves and save a lot of money. “The patterns show garments which would sell for $5OO can be made for about $40,” said Mrs McMahon.
Complicated wool fashion designs can be kitted using methods such as knitting a garment in strips from the band to the shoulder, she said. “We are bringing highfashion knitwear to everybody,” she says. “People are addicted to knitting. We are offering people a chance to wear stuff with style.” Mrs McMahon is on her second visit to New Zealand with her wool fashion entourage, and held fashion parades in Auckland and Wellington before yesterday’s show in Christchurch. She said her fashions and patterns had been extremely popular in New Zealand. "People have gone berserk about it here, she said.
