Wage increase
Sir,—The Employers’ Federation appears to be embarking upon a propaganda exercise to justify the $8 a week rise handed out by the Government Most people have already realised the absurdity of such a meagre rise, given that during the
wage freeze, prices continued to rise, and that many of the price increases occurring at present are around 15 per cent. During the freeze company profits increased, in the main, by 20 to 30 per cent, and at Christmas, many directors received an increase of 50 per cent. Therefore the Employers’ Federation’s concern that an adjustment higher than $8 a week might cause greater unemployment and higher inflation seems unjustified, considering that the companies themselves have done little to alleviate the situation. Sadly, it is the same old story of the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer. — Yours, etc., PETER W. KENNEDY. April 9, 1984.
