Jobs in South Africa
Sir,—“The Press” reports that four Belfast Rugby Club members intend to work in Johannesburg. I recall meeting in Cape Town, in 1947, a group of migrating “Aussies” and “Kiwis,” just landed from a liner. Newspapers welcomed and highlighted their arrival. One New Zealander spoke enthusiastically of greater South African opportunities than our own country offered. South Africa received 45,600 immigrants in 1982 — a dramatic increase. One wonders if any of our disheartened unemployed could find similar opportunities today, temporarily or permanently. The South African Consulate in Wellington is only a postage stamp away for self-motivating, genuine inquirers. Many of us globe trotted when young, to progress and to appreciate our New Zealand heritage. I am talking of possible jobs, not politics. — Yours, etc., •. . JOHN LESLIE. April 13, 1984.
