Record roll predicted

A record roll is predicted for the University of Canterbury this year. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor A. D. Brownlie, told the University Council yesterday that enrolments at the end of last week were higher than the number enrolled by July last year. So far 7587 enrolments had been received, compared with about 7561 for the whole of last year. Professor Brownlie said the council could expect the roll to rise to a record 7700 students by the time the offical count was made in July.

The increase was apparent in first-year entrants,

part-time students, and in those furthering their studies, Professor Brownlie said. No solid evidence supported suggestions that the increase resulted from a lack of employment opportunities. Rather, there was a marked change in the participation of students, he said.

First-year students made up about 24 per cent of the roll while part-time students comprised about 28 per cent, he said. The graduation ceremonies would be held on May 2 and May 3 at the Christchurch Town Hall, the council confirmed yesterday.
