Big Coast rock fall

Greymouth reporter

A flash storm in Ten Mile Valley, north of Greymouth, brought down hundreds of tonnes of rock, cut access to two private coalmines, and damaged equipment yesterday afternoon.

The Kiwi co-operative mine, which has six members, lost three chains of new flume when about two chains of the hillside above the mine collapsed, spilling across the road.

The mine shareholders had been working on their new flume hoping to bring it into use by the week-end

but a pump prooiem torceu them to go home. “Otherwise you might have been writing our obituaries,” said one of the partners, Mr Wayne Ford, last evening.

About 750 tonnes of rock spilled from the hillside. The Grey County Council is expected to start clearing it today. The mine lost equipment apart from the flume, including chainsaws being used on the construction. “We don’t know where they went,” said Mr Ford. Damage is estimated between $lO,OOO and $15,000. Big rata trees collapsed amid the rubble.
