Antarctic jobs in demand
Almost 1000 people have applied for jobs with the New Zealand Antarctic research programme next summer. The Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R. advertised about 50 positions recently for the 1984-85 summer season — about 10 of these are also for the winter season at Scott Base. The information officer of the division, Mr K. O. Clegg, said yesterday that the most popular vacancies had been for general duties staff, indicating the many people
who wanted the opportunity to work in the Antarctic but did not have the specific skills required for many of the jobs. The vacancies include a dog handler, electrician, chefs, information officer, field staff, an officer in charge, and a deputy. Mr Clegg said all applicants would know whether they had been successful by June or July. The 965 applications received so far indicate a similar level of interest to last year.
