Heavy catches on Rakaia

A total of 136 salmon were landed on the second day of the second annual Rakaia River salmon fish'ing contest yesterday. This was more than the number caught over the whole contest last year. An Ashburton resident, Mr H. J. Harrison, topped the scales with his 13.04 kg salmon, and won the $lOOO prize for the heaviest salmon caught yesterday. The second-heaviest salmon was caught by Mr E. G. Heatherbell, of Nelson. His 12.635 kg fish won him $5OO. A $lOO prize also went to the angler with the heaviest trout. Yesterday’s winner was Mr Les Gardiner, of Rakaia, with a 3.335 kg fish. The competition, which began on Wednesday and will end on Sunday, has attracted 763 anglers from throughout New Zealand and as far afield as Europe, the United States, and Australia. It carries prize of $lB,OOO in cash and $2OOO in sponsored prizes, with $6OOO going to the angler who catches the heaviest salmon. The river conditions yesterday were described by anglers as excellent.
