Pakistani assurances

NZPA-Reuter London England’s cricket authorities have received assurances from the Pakistan Board of Control that threatened student demonstrations would not disrupt matches on England’s tour starting next week. A Test and County Cricket Board spokesman said yesterday: “We have received a cable which states that they are not expecting any disruption of the matches.

“All steps are being taken to assure the safety of the players and press during the tour.” The cable was passed on to the England manager, Alan Smith, whose party has completed the New Zealand leg of its tour and leaves for Pakistan today. The threat of demonstrations has been made by Pakistani students protesting against a military government ban on their unions.
