$15,000 wool haul hidden in hay

PA Masterton A Carterton man hid $15,000 worth of stolen wool underneath a pile of hay in his barn, the District Court at Masterton has heard. Graeme Thomas Browne, aged 32, freezing worker and farmer, of Waihine Gorge Road, Carterton, was convicted by Judge H. Gilbert and remanded to February 29 for a probation officer’s report and sentence. He was allowed bail of $750 with a surety of $750. An application for interim suppression of name was denied. Browne was charged with

receiving 13 bales of wool valued at $lO,OOO and seven bales and four fadges of wool valued at $5OOO knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Police prosecutor (SeniorSergeant Noel Wynne) said that Browne paid $4OOO for the wool. He then rebaled it because the stolen bales were branded, stacked, and covered it with hay in the hayshed. Following a police raid on January 24, Browne made a full statement of admission, Mr Wynne said.
