Surge in Chch Angora prices
Prices for Angora goats leapt in Christchurch yesterday.
The average price of all pure-bred bucks sold in the sixth annual production sale of Angora stock was $2225, nearly as much as the top price of $2400 at last year’s sale. Top price yesterday was $4500 twice for bucks bred by the Braemore Angora Stud at Darfield.
Thirteen of the 22 pure-bred, two-tooth bucks equalled or bettered the top price of one year ago.
Although the prices were high for a Christchurch sale, they were still much lower than the prices at the recent national sale in Hamilton.
Consequently stock buyers acting on behalf of commercial Angora breeders in the Auckland district bought over 70 of the 136 lots offered.
Although these buyers did not pay the top prices they snapped up many of the middle-priced bucks and does. Mr Graeme Willson, of Allied Farmers, Pukekohe, said afterwards that he had bought 57 lots for commercial farmers in South Auckland. He said that South Island prices were much lower. At the recent national sale more than double the expected number of spectators turned up and bidding was very keen, he said. Pure-bred, two-tootn bucks
averaged $2597 (22 sold for a total of $57,150); pure-bred, mixed age bucks averaged $1541 (12 sold for a total of $18,500); pure-bred bucks over all averaged $2225 (34 sold for a total of $75,650); pure-bred, two-tooth does averaged $2462 (four sold for a total of $9850); pure-bred, mixed age does averaged $l4lO (five sold for a total of $7050); pure-bred does over all averaged $1877 (nine sold for a total of $16,900); grade one two-tooth does averaged $1525 (10 sold for a total of $15,250); grade one mixed age does averaged $1207 (seven sold for a total of $8450); grade one does over all averaged $1394 (17 sold, $23,700); grade one doe kids averaged $905 (nine sold, $8150); grade one two-tooth bucks averaged $638 (27 sold for $17,250 total); grade one bucks mixed age averaged $385 (seven sold for $2700); grade one bucks over all averaged $586 (34 sold, $19,950); grade one buck kids averaged $3OO (four sold); grade two does averaged $450, three sold); grade three does averaged $47 (32 sold); grade four does averaged $l4 (21 sold); grade kids averaged $66 (16 sold).
