AUCKLAND

Special correspondentAuck-

The luck of the barrier has Natural Star well placed for a win in the 520,000 South Auckland Racing Club Juvenile at Ellerslie tomorrow.

Whereas some of the others in form will be starting from wide at the 1200 m, Vice Royal drew No. 16, Silver Elio, No. 17 — Natural Star has the inside, a real advantage for one of his quickness. A chestnut colt, from Riccarton, Natural Star has been pretty busy, with six races in two months and his form, except for one lapse, has been consistently good. The only time he failed was at Avondale last Saturday when he finished seventh behind Matthew Ryan. Meanwhile, he shaped up much better for a close second to Nampassa at Ellerslie on Monday. Judged by his appearance at Takanini yesterday morning, Natural Star has continued to train on. And the right-handed way around does not seem to bother him: he had no trouble with the plough’s fairly tight circuit when galloping yesterday.

From his five starts, besides the one at Avondale, Natural Star has secured a win and four second placings. His win, though he is from the South Island, came at Awapuni on January 14. The presence of another smart youngster from outside Auckland and the Waikato, Kingdom Bay, has also helped stimulate wide interest in tomorrow’s race. Matthew Ryan and Sobay are horses from Avondale with good chances if they race up to their best form and Jack Hammer, with No. 3 at the barrier, is certainly entitled to respect. Trained at Stratford by Jack Taylor, who made an impact on Auckland racing with Spring Moss, Kingdom Bay was impressive in his last start, winning the Evergreen Lodge Stakes at Trentham on January 23 in lmin 8.84 s for 1200 m. He finished second the time before, over 1000 m at Stratford, and three starts back, won over 1000 m at Te Rapa.

Against Kingdom Bay is his having drawn No. 11 and not having yet raced the right-handed Ellerslie way. It will be surprising, nevertheless, if he is not very prominent. That Matthew Ryan will be up with the pacemakers can be just about guaranteed. He led all the way when winning at Avondale last Saturday, over 1200 m, and, after leading, was edged out by Boilermaker only in the last bit of 1100 m at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. so nay made an impressive racing debut when winning so well at Thames on January 7. She had less to spare in her only start meanwhile, at Rotorua on January 14, but nevertheless again looked good. This will be her big test.
