. . . and Andrew
PA Wellington The Palmerston North jockey, Jules Andrew, is trying his luck in England over jumps. Andrew has joined the stable of the top jumping trainer, Stan Mellor, at Lambourn, in Berkshire, and is hopeful of making his riding debut for the stable shortly. Jules left for England on January 4 after consultations with Mellor and the well-known northern horseman, Ken Browne.
His father, Awapuni trainer, Bill Andrew, had ridden for Mellor when he was campaigning in Europe some years ago and it was through this association that the present stint was arranged. “Jules has been dying to have a go at National Hunt racing for a long time now and decided that now was
the time to try it, if he ever was going to,” said Mrs Vivienne Andrew yesterday morning. “He gave up a good job in the bank but the opportunity was too good to miss.”
Andrew was originally taken on by Mellor essentially as a work rider, according to Mrs Andrew. However, he has evidently impressed the. trainer to such an extent that the latter says he will have rides available for him as soon as his licence is cleared with the English authorities.
“He actually rang us early this morning (Wednesday),” said Mrs Andrew, “and told us he’s been riding Grey Warbler in work.” “He sent us a clipping from the 'Sporting Life’ too. The headline read — ‘Mellor’s Latest Kiwi is a Jockey!' ”
