Police witness had notes on hand

PA Wellington A policeman was rebuked by Mr Justice Quilliam in the High Court at Wellington yesterday for having notes written on his hand about evidence he was giving. After Detective Constable Donald Bryce Lee had finished his examination-in-chief at the trial of three men charged with conspiring with one another to supply cannabis oil, he was asked by counsel, Mr M. A. Bungay, what he had written on his hand! Witness said that it was times, dates, and car n»mtas. |

Asked by Mr Bungay whether that was the way he was trained to give evidence, witness said, “No.” Asked by His Honour if he was acknowledging he had written notes on his hand as evidence he was about to give, witness said, “I took times from my notebook to refresh my memory.” His Honour said, “You know perfectly well you have no right to do that” He told Crown counsel, Mr K. A. Stone, to see that the matter was reported to Detective Constable Lee’s superiors. The trial is continuing.
