Council blue at units’ gaudy hue
The purple-pink hue of Waimairi’s new pensioner housing units in the Main North Road was raised as a matter of urgent business at the council’s annual meeting on Thursday evening. Cr W. T. Rice said he had thought the colour was an undercoat, but when he learned it was a first coat of the final colour he was most upset. Residents had also said the colour was too outstanding, he said. Cr Ralph Skjellerup agreed the shade was unsuitable. It was a “serious blunder on the Main North
Road” and could “turn out to be an eye-sore,” he said. The district engineer, Mr A. J. W. Lamb, said the mistakes had been made in mixing the first coat but the shade would alter with later applications. Councillors questioned if a slight change would be enough. Repainting with another colour would cost about $5OOO, said Mr Lamb. Councillors decided to set up a sub-committee to investigate options for the colour scheme. The flats are due for occupancy before Christmas.
