Free Theatre
Sir,—l read with disquiet the Arts Centre management’s proposal to evict a theatre from the centre. This action, when put in context with its other action of establishing a public bar next to a children’s creche and the proposed development of a convention centre, appear to contradict the purpose of the Arts Centre as stipulated by the University of Canterbury when it was given to the city. Ideals often change when someone is faced with reality, such as wages and the cost of maintenance. However, the management may be following another ideal — that of creating an ideal environment for the business community and the professional arts to gather and perform. This is surely a tragic duplication of resources that our city cannot afford, for our museum and our magnificent Town Hall offer such facilities. — Yours, etc M. F. GERRARD. September 22, 1983.
