Energy plan

Sir,—The country has been taken for a disastrous ride over energy “think big.” Our longest-term selfsufficiency option was to use Maui gas in its raw state. This meant a second pipeline from the field direct to the Nelson area for distribution in the South Island. The use of C.N.G. for transport would have been, vigorously pursued throughout both The take-or-pay agree-

ment was the price demanded by the field discoverers for its development. Once the Government agreed to pay for vast quantities of gas for which there was no national need, the true interests of New Zealand went out the window. The Government failed to take the best option still remaining, which was to develop methanol as a transport fuel. We are now saddled with two colossal white elephants, the refinery expansion and the Mobil plant, and are already beginning to worry how best to replace Maui gas when it is gone. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT.
