Sun Princess wins St Leger

NZPA London England’s champion filly, Sun Princess, scored a courageous win in the 207th St Leger over 14 furlongs (2800 m at Doncaster. The filly, owned by Lord Weinstock, will start next in the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s principal all-age event. The jockey, Willie Carson, drove her to the lead with two furlongs (400 m to run but he was forced to ride her hard all the way to the

line to hold off the challenges of Espirit du Nord and Carlingford Castle. Sun Princess beat Espirit du Nord by three-quarters of a length with Carlingford Castle a short head away third.

The win of Sun Princess gave Carson his second and Hern his sixth St Leger victory. Carson’s previous win was also on a filly, the Queen’s Dunfermline, the last filly to complete the Oaks-Leger double, in 1977.
