Charles Luca sets record

The former New Zealand pacer, Charles Luca, which won five straight before being exported earlier this year, won a $30,000 open pace in track record time for an aged pacer at Yonkers Raceway in New York at the week-end. Mr Bob McArdle, of Christchurch, who exported the H.T. Luca gelding, said yesterday that Charles Luca led all the way on the halfmile track to win in lmin 56.85.

Charles Luca, formerly developed by Alan Scobie at

Winton, was recording his sixth win on end in North America from seven starts, giving him now a career total of 12 starts for 11 wins.

The former Canterbury improver class pacer, Hastie Luca, which won at Addington in April, also won on the same night at Yonkers as Charles Luca — in 2min 2s.

Hastie Luca, also by H.T. Luca, brought his North American record to seven starts for four wins and has taken a lmin 56.2 s record.
