Roaming Supreme sound bet in treble leg

By

TREVOR WILKES

The promising youngster, Roaming Supreme, should start treble investors off on the right foot by winning the second heat of the America’s Trophy, the first leg of the second on-course treble at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s on-course totalisator meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow night. Having only his first run on the Queen Elizabeth II Park track last Tuesday night, Roaming Supreme trailed Smooth Majestic to the home turn, quickly went to the front and cleared away to win his heat impressively in 34.97 s for the 560 m.

Silent Kilty, which outfinished the tiring Smooth Majestic for second, is once again engaged, but was very disappointing when well beaten at Chertsey last Sunday, and a better prospect might be Torlesse Taff. Although only third behind Flying Scotsman and Bark Man Bark in the heats last Tuesday night, Torlesse Taff was certainly doing her best work at the finish, and it must be remembered that she ran the well-regarded Spanish Bijou close on this track last month.

Our Carry On and Master Remo might be rough hopes, but a win by any of the others would come as a major surprise. The other two heats of the America’s Trophy are more open, and in the first of them, Gallant Man, yet to taste defeat in four starts, faces his toughest test to date, and may have to bow to the more experienced Flying Scotsman. Flying Scotsman showed class in defeating Bark Man Bark last Tuesday night, registering 34.995, and looked in good trim for this when effortlessly winning at the Chertsey sweepstake meeting last Sunday. Smooth Majestic is wellboxed and given the right run, could be hard to peg back, while Ladderin Boy and Cookie Wadderin look the pick of the others.

The third heat of the America’s Trophy sees the appearance of Bark Man Bark, and although he has had the misfortune of drawing the extreme outside, his brilliant early speed should enable him to clear any trouble which may occur on the first corner, and he should carry too many guns for his opponents here. Sudden Victory, which is well drawn, is consistent and should be close up all the way, while the much improved Our

Alicia could surprise at good odds.

Sweet and Silent, which won her heat in 35.085, has drawn awkwardly and may need luck in the running and a better prospect should be Rocanere, who has drawn nicely on the rails.

Arkarita should attract attention when she resumes tomorrow night in the Sabins Butchery Stakes. Peter Kane’s brindle bitch was certainly the crowd-pleaser last season with wins in both the New Zealand and South Island championships, and, although she has not raced since early July, looks an outstanding winning prospect fresh. Other attractions at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow night include a charity relay race involving three rugby teams and three league teams, while there will also be a fireworks display.
