Junior basketball

Porirua, Napier and Hamilton emerged with honours on the opening day of the national junior women’s basketball championship at Cowles Stadium, yesterday. In section B North Shore put up a gallant fight before losing to the more experienced Hamilton side 75-51. Reina Hoppolite was impressive with her 23 points for Hamilton and Suzi Balzat scored 14 for North Shore.

Napier, in section D, beat Papakura, also 75-51, with the New Zealand Juniors and under 23 representative, Linda Exeter (24 points), strong in all phases of play. Porirua made light of Mid-Canterbury’s challenge, winning 80-46, receiving

a valuable 30-points contribution from another New Zealand Junior, Angela Kara. In the evening Canterbury showed exciting team-work, especially by Marg Costain and Marama Mulany (26 points each), to beat Wellington, 7348. But Canterbury, the tournament top seed, will need to tighten its defence in future games. In its second game Napier easily accounted for Mid-Can-terbury, 82-41, with Exeter (16) and Christine Parker (14) prominent Other results.—
