Holocaust feared
The “mad action” that destroyed a Korean Airlines 747 airliner in Soviet air space could trigger a nuclear holocaust, said Mr Larry Ross, secretary of the New Zealand Nuclear-Free Zone Committee, yesterday. The New Zealand Government should become a peacemaker in the situation rather than ready itself to particpate in an escalation to nuclear war, he said. Rationality and global perspective were hallmarks of good government faced
with the prospect of human self-extinction, said Mr Ross. The global situation had deteriorated and many more incidents, computer errors, and bad judgements could be expected. New Zealand should declare itself a neutral, nuclear-weapon-free zone and play a mediating role. As an independent, isolated State with no border enemies, New Zealand could pioneer the peacemaking process, Mr Ross said.
